Ayssa Yamaguti NorekGraduate Student

Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, I am now a Latin American History Ph.D Student at Emory University. My research interests include prisons, political prisoners, gender, and Latin American military dictatorships. I have a BA in History and a BA in Social Sciences from Fundação Getúlio Vargas - FGV-Rio (Getúlio Vargas Foundation), and a MA in Social History of Culture from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro - PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro). During my master, I was also a Visiting Research Fellow at Brown University (Spring 2019) advised by professor James Green.

I am also interested in the art world, and I engage with it anytime that I can: in poetry, musical theater, and filmmaking. I was published in four Brazilian anthologies: Ponte de Versos (2008) from Ibis Libris, Antologia Ruínas (2020) from Patuá, Quem dera o Sangue (2020) from Uratau and Prêmio Off Flip 2021 (2021) from Selo Off Flip. In film, I was the producer, assistant director, and lyricist of the musical short-film "Fantasma Neon" ("Neon Phantom"). Our movie won the Golden Leopard for best international short-film in Locarno Film Festival, and was selected in festivals such as San Sebastian Film Festival, Guadalajara International Film Festival, BFI London Film Festival, Festival de Cinema de Gramado, and others.
