Maren FauthVisiting Graduate Student
I am an exchange student from the University of Augsburg, Germany visiting Emory during fall 2025 and spring 2026. I received my B.A. in English and American Studies with a minor in Philosohpy in 2024 and am currently pursuing my M.A. in North American Studies. Besides history I also study the literature, culture and politics of the United States, Canada and Mexiko. During my stay at Emory, I am focussing on the history aspect of my studies. I am especially interested in women's history, African American history and the history of social protest movements. My recent research projects have included topics like food and empire in R.F. Kuang's novel Babel, American exceptionalism in history and the present, U.S. populism, working class women's writing of the 1930s, the representation of Vietnam in Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, and the labor of German immigrant women in Chicago during the late 19th century. When I am not at Emory I work as a student assistant for Augsburg University's department of New English Literatures and Cultural Studies.
My M.A. thesis explores questions of reproductive rights and freedom in U.S. history and literature. Comparing literary works from the early 20th century, the 1980s and recent years, I analyze the ways in which literature represents the various attitudes towards reproductive rights during the different time periods.
