Bruna Digiacomo Cerveira CoutinhoGraduate Student

I am a PhD candidate originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I earned both my undergraduate and master’s degrees in History from Universidade Federal Fluminense. My research and teaching focus on the Atlantic World, Liberated Africans, slavery, capitalism, and Latin America.

In my dissertation, I examine how the Mixed Commissions played a key role in the relationship between Brazil and Great Britain. I am especially interested in the experiences of Liberated African children placed under apprenticeship, and how their lives help us understand the broader impacts of British informal imperialism, Brazilian social structures, and the meanings of emancipation in 19th-century Brazil.

My research has been supported by the Luso-American Development Foundation, the Halle Institute for Global Research and Learning, and CAPES (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), Brazil.
