Beverly Val-AddoGraduate Student

I am a first-year doctoral student and received my B.A. in history from the University of Maryland, College Park. I am interested in the history of the African diaspora in West Africa and look at the intersection of ethnicity, gender, and migration in a pre-early colonial context. I seek to understand the histories of Afro-Brazilians who migrated to Ghana during the mid-nineteenth century and recontextualize return movements in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In addition to exploring the integration of returnees into West African communities, I am also interested in examining the gender dynamics and role of women in developing those communities.
