Application Process

The Department of History application deadline is THURSDAY, JANUARY 3, 2013.

Early Application Fee Waiver!

If you submit your application on or before October 31, 2012, your application fee will be waived. This will be automatic, and you will not need to contact us to receive this waiver.

Note: your fee will be waived as long as the application is submitted by midnight (U.S. Pacific time) on October 31. Official scores and letters of recommendation may arrive later.

Additional Application Requirements for the Department of History

In addition to the minimum admission requirements listed by the Laney Graduate School, the Department of History PhD program also requires:

  1. A Writing Sample, such as a paper written for a course or a chapter from a senior or master's thesis. Select a finished piece of work that demonstrates your writing skills and also your analytical ability. Make sure it is your best work, preferably on a subject related to your historical interests. Your writing sample should be uploaded in the "Attach Documents" section of the application.
  2. TOEFL Scores.  Students whose first language is not English are required to submit TOEFL scores in addition to the GRE scores.
  3. Research Interest or Specialization. List your Research Interest or Specialization where this is indicated on the application. Your interests may be general or specific and you may list multiple interests.
  4. Research Experience.  List your “Research Experience” where indicated on the application.  List those research experiences which you see as relevant for preparing you for graduate school.  Relevant experiences need not have been specifically in history but should have provided some training and involvement with historical research in general.
