Over the past several decades, the department has developed a number of extra-curricular faculty-student seminars which are more fully described below. The Vann Seminar is fundamentally dedicated to pre-modern European history and its transnational connections. It is named after a beloved former faculty member and has been in operation since 1985. The Departmental Seminar, equally longstanding, aims to sustain conversation about broader issues in historical research. Inaugurated during the last decade, the Workshop in Colonial and Postcolonial Studies is led by faculty whose interests lie in Africa and South Asia. Finally, our newest seminar was developed in 2010 by graduate students and seeks to provide a forum for discussing issues in U.S. history.
